In the Spotlight: Looking at Broadway

Did you catch our article about Broadway? Now we’re bringing showbiz to a whole new stage: blogs! This month, The Living Center is here to catch you up on the history of this prestigious epicenter of theatre and talk about current Broadway shows and events, too.

Broadway, the legendary theatre district in midtown Manhattan, was established before the United States gained independence from Britain! In 1750, Walter Murray and Thomas Keane established New York City’s first significant theatre. Though the city paused the development of the district a few times for major historical events, Broadway was on the rise. By 1900, it was a mile and a half long! The district began to shrink in physical size. Still, many rightfully argue that it grew in popularity: with smash-hit shows like Les Miserables, Show Boat, and Oklahoma! gracing the stages, audiences soon flocked to the area to see their favorite plays and musicals.

In the past year, Broadway shut down due to the pandemic. However, those theatre lights are slowly turning on once again. Soon, theatergoers will be able to enjoy shows just like before, and you can count on the residents of The Living Center to be enthusiastic fans all the way from Mount Vernon, Ohio!
